Business people in Taiwan are usually familiar with Western business custom, but some reciprocal effort to learn and understand Taiwanese business culture is essential. This starts with dressing appropriately (conservative and formal), and understanding the hierarchical business structures here, but there is more to it. Business culture in Taiwan is based on deep mutual trust and understanding - expect and embrace a lot of relationship building before getting to negotiations, and always accept invitations to bond outside of a work environment. It may be more optional in the UK or the US, but here it is essential to building successful, lasting relationships.
